Chickasaw County Iowa

Chickasaw County News
Reported in the Mason City Globe Gazette

The following is a special contribution to the web site from Kay Ehlers of Texas (formerly of Mason City, IA).  She has chosen a genealogical project of extracting and transcribing items appearing in the Mason City Globe Gazette Newspapers of genealogical value, such as obits, births, marriages, marriage licenses granted, etc.  News pertaining to Chickasaw County residents has often appeared in The Globe Gazette and we are pleased to have this contribution from Ms Ehlers.  All of the following extractions are from 1939.  The number in parenthesis, at the end of the source citation, is simply a tracking number from her index, it is not part of the source citation itself.

NASHUA – The marriage of Glen Gene DURNAL to Miss Clara WILCOTT, both of Peoria, Ill., took place at the Little Brown Church April 6, the Rev. William Kent officiating.  Glenn DURNAL, with Gene Durnal’s Rio Grande Rangers, direct from Hollywood’s western pictures and ZERA, Del Rio, Tex., whose marriage was witnessed by his large company of young men, went directly from here with his bride to Charles City, where he had been scheduled to appear with his Rangers at the Charles Theater Saturday night.  They took this opportunity while so near to be married in the famous Church in the Vale.

One More Marriage at Church in Vale in Feb. Than March
– Mason City Globe Gazette,
Monday, April 3, 1939, p. 10, col. 4 (CH73)
NASHUA – March fell one short of the marriages performed at the Little Brown church, in February, when there were 54 recorded. March 1938 witnessed 50, and February 46, so that on the whole 1939 still holds the record for the year to date.
The church interior is being repainted, and walls repapered and it is necessary for the work to be done during the night so as not to interfere with the performing of marriage ceremonies there. The decorators begin their work at 6 p.m. and work until the small hours of the morning.  The bad condition of the roads has probably made considerable difference with the number of marriages the past month.
Marriages performed by the Rev. William Kent at the Little Brown church included those of:
-Wanda GRINGER, Hills, and Kenneth R. HAMILTON, Davenport
-Dorothy JACOBS and Donald HOLTZ, Davenport
-Merle Elizabeth DALE, Madison, Wis. and Collins RICHARDSON, Oregon, Wis.
-Clarice CHORLOG, Stoughton, Wis. and Roy CHRISTENSEN, Oregon, Wis.
