Chickasaw County Death Index, Book 1 (1880-1897) The deaths indexed in this publication are the earliest record of deaths in Chickasaw County, Iowa. They are arranged chronogically, beginning in 1880. Transcribed for this index are the following elements of the death entries: Record Number, Name, Age, Marital Status, Death Date, Birthplace and Place of Burial. Many deaths were not recorded during this period, therefore this is not a complete record of the deaths that occurred in Chickasaw County during the period. However, it is a complete index of all the deaths that were so recorded. |

Chickasaw County Marriage Index by Bride, Books 1-5 (1853 - Mid 1901) This publication is an updated and revised edition of CCGS's original marriage record book. The data has been "computerized", via a database, then sorted by surname of the bride, for the five earliest county marriage record books. This format is very easy to use, since you essentially see all the marriages for a specific surname over the nearly 50 year timeframe. Very convenient for those working on finding members of an entire family. Data presented in this publication includes: name of the bride, name of the groom, date of marriage, and record number. |

CCGS members have logged hundreds of hours in this on-going project. To date, six books have now
been published as a result of this project, yet there is still more to do in the future. The hard work of these
dedicated volunteers has been critical to finding and preserving burial information, particularly for burials
prior to 1880, for which there are virtually no civil records, in the county or at the state level. For those
researchers where distance is a big factor, having the opportunity to acquire this information at a
reasonable cost is very beneficial. In regard to the two newest CCGS cemetery publications, ie. #404 and #408, extensive work was done in the compilation of these data. These two works contain burials as early as 1852. Approximately 1500 obituaries were read and cross-referenced (in 1999) with gravestone inscriptions. Additional date information gleened from cross-referencing was added to the burial records, where perhaps there was only a year provided on a stone. This added detail will make it easier for the researcher to locate an obituary in the microfilmed newspapers. Each of the cemeteries covered in the two publications were re-canvassed in 1999, in some cases, more than once. Cross-referencing was also done against any work previously done for these cemeteries in the late 1970s by CCGS members. Further cross-referencing was done with other documentation including church records, vital records and WPA cemetery transcripts recorded in the 1930s. This comprehensive effort definitely make these cemetery record books extremely useful to the Chickasaw County researcher. |

CHICKASAW COUNTY ~ WHERE WE WERE ~~ A History in Maps This is a 27 page booklet of Chickasaw County maps ranging from an 1849 map of Bradford Township showing Indian trails and villages, maps showing schools in 1890, town and post offices 1852-1996, a 1915 Atlas county map, to a 1958 map showing roads at the time when the consolidation of rural schools was beginning. This booklet is an overview of Where We Were... and Where We Are, written from a historian's perspective. It can be very helpful in answering questions, such as "Just where was Devon, anyway?"
