Lewis Ross, 61, Dies on Sunday, Funeral Wed,
Died at Convalescent Home after Four Months Illness, Always a Resident of this County


Lewis Ross, aged 61 years, 11 months and three days, a lifelong resident of this county, died Sunday morning January 25, 1942 at 10:00 o’clock in the New Hampton convalescent home. Mr Ross had been seriously ill for the past four months.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:20 o’clock at the Perry Funeral Home and at 2:00 o’clock at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Reverend Theodore Fritschel was in charge. During the services, Mrs. Charles Doye sang.

Pall bearers were Sam BRUMMOND, Will WENTZ, Ben HOLSCHLAG, Bill HOLTZ, Chris BECKMAN and John JIRAK, all of this community.

Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

Lewis ROSS was born in Washington Township, Chickasaw County on February 23, 1880, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick ROSS. He was educated in the Tierney School in Washington Township and grew to young manhood there.

He married Augusta BECKER of New Hampton on February 12, 1903, and they went to housekeeping on a farm west of New Hampton. Several years ago they retired from the farm and moved to this city where they have since resided.

Mr ROSS was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was a kind and friendly man and was a devoted husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, his mother, Mrs. Jake HEISELMAN, seven daughters:  Mrs. Louis COTANT (Leona) of Cresco, Mrs. Frank SCHOENFELD (Dora), Mrs. Ora CURTIS (Luella), Mrs. Edward BOEHMER (Clara), and Mrs. Oscar RANDALL (Stella) of New Hampton, and Mrs. Vincent UNDERWOOD (Elda) and Mrs. Kenneth YEARLING (Eleanor) of Chicago; thirty-one grandchildren; one great-grandchild;  four sisters:  Mrs. Neil MAY of Rochester, Minnesota; Mrs. Frank HAUPT of Morristown, Minnesota; Mrs. Wm. SHAUGHNESSY of LaHarpe, Kansas; and Mrs. Charlie BARTZ of Ionia; and four brothers, Emil of Rochester, August of Winona, Minnesota; Henry of Oran and Fred of New Hampton.

A daughter and son preceded their father in death.

Augusta Ross Services Held Wednesday

Mrs. Augusta B. ROSS, 88, died in a Waterloo hospital Sunday morning at 7:30 of complications of advanced age. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John M. Rohde officiating. Mrs. Galen Duneman provided the organ music and internment was in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Augusta BECKER was born August 16, 1879, in Germany, the daughter of Fred and Minnie BECKER. On Feb 12, 1903, she became the bride of Louis ROSS in New Hampton. She lived in New Hampton until the death of her husband in 1942. Since that time she has made her home in Waterloo with her daughter, Mrs. Ora Curtis.

She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Dora SCHOENFELD of Ionia, Mrs. Ora (Luella) CURTIS of Waterloo, Mrs. Oscar (Stella) RANDALL of New Hampton, Mrs. Eleanor YEARLING and Mrs. Vincent (Elda) UNDERWOOD of Chicago, 36 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Louis, in infancy, three daughters, Frieda, in infancy, Mrs. Ed (Clara) BOEHMER and Mrs. Louis (Leona) COTANT, two sisters and two brothers.
