SPLENDID PIONEER WOMAN, RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY NEARLY SIXTY YEARS, BURIED IN GRACELAND CEMETERY

Mrs Carrie GROVE died in her home in Richland Township, Thursday morning July 21, 1927 at the age of 85 years.

She suffered a slight sroke of paralysis two years ago from which she never recovered. On June 10th she suffered a second stroke, followed by hypothetical pneumonia. Death came as a blessed relief after a week of intense suffering.

The deceased, Carrie CHRISTENSEN was born at Lardahl, Norway on Aug. 25, 1842. She came to America at the age of 20 years, to the home of a married sister in Janesville, Wisconsin.

On October 26, 1868 she was united in marriage with Mr. Peter T. GROVE of Stoughton, Wis. and they immediately came to the fine home in Jacksonville Township that had been prepared for her. They traveled by train to Calmar which was the end of the railroad in those pioneer days. When they were ready to leave Calmar they discovered his team had broken out and returned home. Then Mr. GROVE walked to Jacksonville got his team and drove back to Calmar for his bride.

To this union, ten children were born, eight of whom survive their mother, who died Thursday and their father who died 12 years ago. They are Charles, Montana; Theodore of Hickley, Minnesota, Mary, Minneapolis, Abner, Gilman, Susie, William, and Pearl all of this county. One daughter Mrs. Julia WENTZ died about 5 years ago and one son who died in infancy.

The deceased also had twenty-three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. GROVE was a member of the Lutheran faith. He funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Christian church at Republic. Rev. Harry SECOR of the Baptist church in New Hampton officiated at the services. Burial was made in Graceland Cemetery.

The deceased spent most of her life in Chickasaw County, living in Jacksonville and Richland Townships.

She was a very excellent pioneer wife and mother, neighbor and friend. She reared a monument to her credit in the excellent boys and girls she gave birth to and to which they gave their family name.

Few of us will live as long and as well and fewer yet will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch.

To her children we extend sympathy in their sorrow.
