Nature's Fury

This is what remained of the L.J. SIMPSON place after the tornado of 10 May 1918.  It was the day of the school picnic, for the country school nearby.  Mothers and children took shelter in their cellar.

The Albert & Molly (Tierney) SMITH place after the tornado of 10 May 1918.  Mr Smith was killed from injuries received from flying debris after making sure his wife and daughter were safe in the cellar.  Unfortunately, I don't think I was ever told who it is that is standing in the ruble of the house.

The HUFFMAN Implement Shop, at Ionia, after the tornado of 23 Apr 1948

While growning up, I remember hearing the terrifing stories associated with each of these disasters of nature.   The pictures, from the aftermath of these events, which occurred in Chickasaw County illustrate the destruction in Dayton and Chickasaw Townships.  In each case, the people in these pictures were relatives or close neighbors of my Grandmother, Florence Erickson Hartmann, and the pictures were preserved in her scrapbook. --Webmaster
