The illustration below is the result of months of research by the Chickasaw County Genealogical
Society and was created by member J.L. Kottke. It is a synthesis of research using historical
map information from 1800s maps; court records; newspapers of Nashua, Fredericksburg and New
Hampton; interviews and society archival library materials collected by members of CCGS. This and many other very interesting historical illustrations and information was created and published in CCGS booklet "Where We Were, A History in Maps". (If you would like to learn more regarding this booklet and availability, please see the CCGS Publications section.) This booklet was developed with several objectives in mind, foremost among them: to aid the researcher in understanding and locating places, villages, settlements, etc. that have long since vanished and to be able to "place" them in relation to time and geography within the county. Towns or villages known in history, not listed elsewhere are: Brooklyn, "Up the Creek" and Reilly Ridge. Brooklyn was located between Bradford and Nashua in Bradford Township. Reilly Ridge Settlement was located where the Sacred Heart Church was in Utica Township. J.H. Powers, in Historical and Reminiscences of Chickasaw County (1894, pages 158 – 159) writes about "Up the Creek ", located in Jacksonville Township along Crane Creek. The area, no longer a village, is now known as Crane Creek Immanuel Lutheran Church. Another town, Indiantown (1856 – 1862), appears on a map (1860s) and is written of in a book, Abandoned Towns, Villages, and Postoffices of Iowa, by David C. Mott.
