Understanding a Section of Land

The following graphic is a basic "short course" on the facts and figures pertaining to a Section of Land, which is the designation for one square mile tracts of land which comprise our townships. Generally speaking, 36 Sections normally make up a township, but not in all cases. In Chickasaw County the northern tier of townships contain more sections than the middle and south tiers.

The northern tier of townships in Chickasaw County:  Deerfield, Washington, Jacksonville and Utica each contain 18 more sections of land than the other eight townships. These extra 18 sections also happen to have numerical designations which duplicate other section numbers on the plat maps. For our purposes, to eliminate any confusion in these pages of the website, I have designated the duplicate section numbers with an "N" (meaning north), in order to keep things straight.

This basic short course in the facts and figures pertaining to the "Section" should help take some of the mystery out of understanding the land descriptions you will find when researching land records and deeds in our area.
