  • The official census day was June 1, although the enumerator may have visited the household at a later date.
  • Whenever you see "within the year" for this census it means during the year before the official census day, that is, between June 1, 1869 and May 31, 1870.
  • Column 19 was the citizenship question: "Male Citizens of the U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards." The question was answered with a check mark for "yes".
  • If the person was a foreign-born citizen, this means that he had become naturalized by 1870.

1875 Iowa State Census

This was a statistical census only and, by comparison with all the other State and Federal schedules discussed in this section, not as beneficial to the family history researcher.

One other disadvantage of the 1875 Iowa State Census is that it is not as readily available as many of the others.
